Prospect Elementary has represented the Seymour community well by winning the Blount County Basketball Championship. The team went 15-1 losing only to Middlesettlements by one point.
“This was supposed to be a rebuilding year but we ended up winning the championship and almost went undefeated,” Prospect assistant coach Thomas Cobb said. The team was made up of nine fifth graders and four fourth graders under the guidance of head coach Darrell Cox and assistants Cobb and Steve Webb.
They went in to the tournament determined, focused and ready to bring home the 1st place trophy. Starting the tournament the boys had a first round bye; second round defeated Fairview then in the semifinals avenged their only loss and defeated Middlesettlements. The boys then went on to play Greenback in the championship game on Dec. 3. During the Greenback game, the Prospect boys found themselves behind, never leading over Greenback until the final seconds. With only 14 seconds to go, Gaven French dribbled down the court trying to get open for a shot, when there was no open shot to take he passed inside to DC Cole. Cole made a move on the block and laid in a shot with only four seconds left on the clock, putting Prospect ahead by one. Greenback inbounded the ball but they were stopped by the fierce determination of the Prospect boys making them the County Champions by a final score of 31 to 30.
“This team earned with all the hours spent at practice three and four days a week and all the sprints after missed foul shots. This team pushed each other to be better because they knew it would take a team effort to hang a championship banner on that gym wall and that is exactly what they did,” Cobb said.
The Prospect roster included Gaven French, Thomas Bowers, Austin Zane, DC Cole, Evan Webb, Cameron Neely, Lane Stott, Matthew Coron, Zane Rose, Zayne Walker, Kinley Cobb, Riley Isbill, Parker Carrell and Dakahrion Patterson. Congratulations to Prospect on their win.
