“Never, never, never give up!” That was a quote from Sir Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of England during World War II when the German Nazis were trying to take England and didn’t.
The quote applies to The King’s Academy Lady Lion’s softball team after winning the 2019 Division II-A State Championship by defeating Chattanooga Christian School by a score of 3-1 in Murfreesboro. The Lady Lions had to come out of multiple loser brackets starting in regional play to get to the state championship game but never gave up. Coach Marc Weekly has coached many of these girls on this team for 10 years with one of those girls being his daughter, Regan Weekly. “This was special,” Weekly said. “We’re just very happy to bring another state title to the community of Seymour who deserves it.”
After a scoreless first inning the Lady Lions got on the scoreboard first in the second inning as senior Hayden Jenkins singled and then stole second base. She advanced to third after a sacrifice by Blayne King. KJ Ammons then hit an RBI single to score on Jenkins making the score 1-0 TKA.
In the third Katelyn Norris scored on a sacrifice fly by senior Regan Weekly to give the Lady Lions a 2-0 lead.
CCS scored their first run in the fourth on back-to-back singles leaving two runners in scoring position. CCS then hit an RBI single. The tying run was thrown out a home plate. That made the score 2-1.
TKA scored their final run in the sixth inning, which turned out to be an insurance run after Weekly scored on a Jenkins double making the final score 3-1 TKA.
Kaylan Cole got the win in the circle for the Lady Lions. The next time she steps on a softball field in school competition she will be a Tennessee Lady Volunteer.
In this game Cole gave up five hits and one run while striking out two on 114 pitches.
