When the Tennessee Department of Transportation announced the Henley Street Bridge will remain closed and under construction until 2014, many businesses struggling in South Knoxville cringed at the grim prospect.

And while little has been done to help this troubled area, Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett has taken a special interest in ensuring the survival of South Knoxville.

“The closure of the Henley Street Bridge has been devastating for South Knoxville Businesses,” he said. “A lot of have closed down and others are just hanging on. It is just a ghost town out there.”
