Aligning with eye witness reports of Seymour residents, the helicopter that had been seen in the area landed on the high school football field Nov. 13.
Exiting from the helicopter and greeting by a swan of welcoming students was Colonel Bruce P. Crandall.
Crandall, a Medal of Honor recipient, flew 22 missions in an unarmed helicopter into enemy fire to bring ammunition and supplies and evacuate the wounded during the battle of la Drang in the Vietnam War.

“Our history students who knew what he did were very excited,” said SHS Principal Kristy Wallen. “Those who didn’t know were still appreciative of his arrival.”
