Sevier County Choral Society rehearsals will begin at 7 p.m. Jan. 19 at the First United Methodist Church located on the corner of the Parkway and Cedar Street (214 Cedar Street) in the choir room.
This spring the group will work on what is traditionally known as the Easter portion of Handel's Messiah. This is a classical favorite with many singers.
Membership in the Choral Society is open to singers who are willing strive for excellence. New singers are welcome—no audition is required. Those who have Shirmer's edition of Messiah, are asked to bring it to rehearsal. If not, music will be supplied.
The group will prepare for its spring concerts (concert dates are to be arranged, but are usually held in the middle of May). The Friday concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Sevierville. The second concert, which will be held on the following Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m., will be held at the Gatlinburg Presbyterian Church, 237 Reagan Drive.
The Sevier County Choral Society offers college scholarships for high school and college students (not limited to music students) who participate with the group in rehearsals and singing engagements. Scholarship money is $500 per calendar year of participation. If a student enters the program as a high school or college freshman, he or she can earn up to $2,000 in scholarship money by the time of graduation.
There are certain criteria that must be met to qualify for scholarships. Scholarship money is $500 per calendar year of participation. The scholarships are available to all students whether or not they plan to major in music in college.
Patrons of the Sevier Choral Society receive free tickets and recognition in every concert program. Donation categories range from $24 and under–Friend of the Society to Sustaining Patron–$1,000. Program advertising ranges from $75 for one eighth page ad to $500 for a full page ad.
Founded in 1998, the Sevier County Choral Society is under the direction of David Wright. The purpose of the SCCS is, “to advance the appreciation of choral music throughout Sevier County and East Tennessee." The primary focus of the Sevier County Choral Society is to present musical masterworks in an excellent, enjoyable, and enthusiastic manner for the purpose of enhancing musical expertise in both performance and listening.
