The Seymour High School Marching Band leapt into elite status last Saturday after a huge day competing.
More than a dozen schools were represented at the Karns Marching Invitational, where bands first competed against others in their class.
In the past, Seymour performed well against other 2A schools. However, this year marked only their second season since jumping up to 3A.
They proved up to the challenge, coming in first place in their class and earning a spot in the finals, where they placed third, only beaten by a very tight margin.
“The difference between first and fourth was just four points,” said John Staser, band booster president. “This is so huge for such a young band.”
The SHS Color Guard also placed first in 3A. The band hopes to come off the strong showing ready for this Saturday, when Seymour will host 24 bands for the Foothills Classic.
Staser indicated that the turnout will mark the largest number of competing schools at the competition. It also represents an important step for Seymour, as a winning performance will help support the band’s exhaustive costs going forward.
“This Saturday is vital to keeping the band funded for the rest of the season,” Staser said.
The Foothills Classic kicks off this Saturday at noon in Seymour.
