The Maryville College softball team advanced to 4-12 on the season after splitting their Great South Athletic Conference season opener against LaGrange College in Georgia this weekend. The Scots lost the first game 4-3 before shutting out the Panthers 7-0 in the nightcap.
During the opening challenge, LaGrange posted a pair of runs off MC hurler Sarah Reeder in the second inning. The Scots fought back to tie the score in the sixth before the Panthers pulled ahead in the bottom of the inning to make the score 3-2 after six full innings. Maryville tied the game in the top of the seventh, before LaGrange pushed across the game winning run in their final at-bat.
Maryville out hit their GSAC rival with an eight hit team effort. Leah Kelley went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Hope Marlow and Andrea Brew added extra base hits for the Scots. Marlow scored a run after her triple while Brew pushed across an RBI with her first homerun of the season.
Sarah Reeder suffered the loss after tossing 6.2 innings and scattering seven hits. She struck out three while allowing four earned runs.
In the second game, Reeder tossed a complete game shutout. Reeder faced 25 Panthers allowing only three hits and for the second game in a row MC’s defense was errorless for the win.
MC jumped on the scoreboard with six runs in the first pair of innings. Their ten hit team effort was supported by Jessica McCarter’s 3-for-4 performance at the plate. The senior scored a pair of runs while driving in a run. Alana Van Hoy and Andrew Brew were 2-for-4 each with key RBI’s while Chastity Smith deposited a three-run homerun to help MC’s offensive output.
LaGrange falls to 11-6 and 3-1 in the GSAC on the season while MC moves to 4-12 and 1-1 in league play.
The Softball Scots will return to action on Saturday and Sunday when they host GSAC foes Agnes Scott and Spelman.
