An inmate who was receiving treatment at Blount Memorial Hospital escaped on July 20, but was apprehended within minutes.
Blount County Sheriff James L. Berrong said that Michael David Word, 44, was about to be released from BMG when he ran out of his room, closing the officer’s hand in the door before fleeing the hospital on foot.
The corrections officer chased after Word, and apprehended him on Elizabeth Street, approximately one mile from the hospital.
The officer was hurt, and is currently receiving treatment at BMH for an injury to his hand. Word was taken back to BMH, before he was returned to the detention facility the same afternoon.
He will be charged with felony escape, and could possibly face additional charges.
Word was booked into the Blount County Detention Facility two days prior to the hospital incident for violating his probation on misdemeanor charges.
