State Senator for Sevier and Blount County Doug Overby made a special guest appearance at the Seymour Business Association meeting on Monday.
Overby spoke to the association about specific pieces of Legislature that he believed everyone should know about, three pieces of Legislature that he believed were of particular interest to residents of Sevier County and three things that may be coming up in the future that residents may want to think about.
The three pieces of Legislature he believes everybody in Tennessee should have some passing knowledge of are the budget, education, and the third is the bill meant to try to save Tennessee hospitals.
The bills of particular importance for Sevier County residents in Overby’s opinion are the state’s advertising budget for tourism, doing away with taxation on food bought by hotel and motel owners to give away for free to their guests, and making vacation lodging services on an equal standing with Real Estate brokers and time share holders.
The three things Overby said residents should think about in the years to come are national health care, the way judges are chosen in Tennessee, and the third is the sale of wine in grocery stores.
Overby ended the talk by stressing to the association the importance of voting, especially in light of the low voter turn out in Sevier County.
“We really need to take seriously the privilege that voting is,” he said.
The Seymour Business Association is currently accepting new members, call (865) 573-2111 for more information.
Also, during the month of July all meetings of the Seymour Business Association will be suspended, and will begin again in August.
