Three local Cadette Girl Scouts have made it their priority to give back to the community.
Cadette Girl Scout Troop #20779 from Seymour Middle School consists of three girls, eighth graders Makayla McVittie and Emily Hutchins, and seventh grader Savannah Hebert.
Even though the group is small, Troop Leader Laura Hebert said they accomplish a lot while having a great time.
“We have had a little group that has carried on, they like being together and they decided that they really like volunteer work,” Hebert said.
The girls’ interest in volunteering was peeked after they attended Earth Fest at Pellissippi State last year, but at the time they weren’t old enough to participate in volunteer activities.
“This year was there first time that they were really old enough and mature enough to take on the responsibility of volunteering,” Hebert said.
Last fall the girls raised money and collected clothing, furniture and household items for a family who lost their home in a fire and the Cadettes also raised money to fill over 60 stockings with gifts for children in the Seymour community for Christmas.
“We had a three day garage sale and we earned enough money to fill the stockings and to give the family money, house wares and gift certificates,” Hebert said. “They probably put in over 100 hours just for that project.”
In addition, the girls also volunteered for a day at the Fantasy of Trees.
This spring the Cadettes assisted a retired teacher with taking many donated books to the Seymour Library, they volunteered all day assisting with recycling at the Earth Fest at Pellissippi State and at the Critter Fest sponsored by the Blount County Humane Society.
Currently the girls are looking forward to participating in the Epilepsy Foundation’s Mud Volleyball Tournament this summer.
“These Girl Scouts have really learned about the value of volunteering and are excited to do more community service in the future,” Hebert said.
