Local prayer supporters are playing a vigil before tonight’s Sevier County Commission Meeting at the Sevier County Courthouse.
The group hopes to show their support of county officials’ decision to continue reciting the Lord’s Prayer at Commission meetings, and to not take down the Ten Commandments off the courthouse wall.
Organizers hope to have enough supporters come to the vigil to be able to make a circle around the entire courthouse. They also emphasize this is not a protest, but a show of support.
Over a month ago Americans United for Separation of Church and State threatened the County with a lawsuit if they did not stop receiving the prayer at the beginning of commission meetings and if they would not take the Ten Commandments poster off of the meeting room’s wall.
County officials have said they will not give in to either request.
The vigil in support of prayer will take place at 6:30 p.m. outside of the Courthouse before the Sevier County Commission meeting which will take place at 7 p.m.
