The Seymour Athletics program has had an outstanding year (2009 – 2010) for individual athletic awards.
On the Eagles football team, eight players were placed on the All IMAC District team. On the first team was; Keegan Newport, Blake Overton, Stephen Martin and Cory Clark.
Second team included Joe McCarter, Hunter Crain, Wes White and Cody Watson.
Stephen Martin received the Academic Award, while Wes Humes received the Character Award.
First team selection Keegan Newport, a two sport star, plays baseball and was the leading homerun hitter last season. He carries that hitting ability to the football field as well. At linebacker, Newport delivered 101 total tackles for the season while fighting an injury the first half of the season. The senior also had nine tackles for losses along with six sacks.
Another first team pick was Stephen Martin the kicker/punter. He made 6 of 9 field goals including a long 48 yarder.
Martin averaged 37.7 yards per punt with the longest a 60 yarder and kicked 17 percent of his kickoffs for touchbacks.
In girls’ volleyball, Andrea Marcowitz was outstanding.
Senior Bailey Webb along with Megan Gamble was very much instrumental in the Lady Eagles Golf team coming out of their District to make the Regional this past fall.
Also last year, two outstanding athletes signed College Athletic scholarship papers.
Casie Cowan, senior point guard signed a basketball scholarship with Cumberland College.
Brandon Timmerman, senior third baseman and pitcher signed with Carson-Newman College.
Seymour has always been a school that is blessed with outstanding athletes. There doesn’t seem to be any end in sight. The Seymour Herald would like to congratulate all these athletes who have been honored and any others who have been inadvertently left out.
