A special surprise presentation was held at Sevier County High School to announce that a high school senior from Sevierville has been named one of 12 National Finalists for the prestigious 2009 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award.
The award honors students who embody the Heisman spirit of hard work and dedication, both on and off the field, through outstanding achievements in athletics, academics and community-school leadership
From a highly competitive pool of over 50,000 applicants, high school senior Alex McCandless advanced to become one of only 12 national finalists.
Finalists receive a $100 Wendy’s gift card, a $2,000 donation to their high school and an all-expenses-paid trip to New York City, Dec. 11-13 to participate in Heisman Weekend activities.
These activities include participation in the nationally televised awards ceremony broadcast on ESPN2 where the national winner will be announced, presentation of a gold medal by Archie Griffin who is the only two-time collegiate Heisman winner and a selection of activities and tours throughout New York City.
Created in 1994 in partnership with the Heisman Memorial Trust, the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award has recognized high school seniors who embody the spirit of the Heisman name for 16 years.
