Trent Steele of Knoxville returned recently from a DockDogs event held in Charlotte, NC where he and Alex, his rescued Weimaraner, participated in the dock diving event. He brought home First Place in Big Air and First Place in Speed retrieve.
Trent rescued Alex from Wolf Creek Weimaraner Rescue 5 months ago. “He has brought joy to my life since the first day I got him,” Trent said. “He has to be exercised regularly, so I started throwing the ball.” Alex picked up retrieving pretty fast, according to Trent. “People ask me how I trained him, I tell them ‘I threw the ball off the dock and he jumped!”
The Big Air competition measures how far the dogs can jump. Alex brought home First Place in Big Air with a 21’ jump in the finals. “I was so proud of my pup because he loves to be up there on the dock, and he gives it his all, just for me.” Trent said.
Alex also participated in Speed Retrieve. This is a timed event on how fast they can get from the dock to the duck at the end of the 40’ pool. Alex won first place with a 6.655 second run in the finals. Trent said, “He had a long jump and is always fast once he gets in the water.”
Trent and Alex are members of Smokey Mountain DockDogs; a local club which covers the entire East Tennessee area including Seymour area. It also is affiliated with the national organization DockDogs. This is a “zero discrimination club” meaning your dog could jump 2’ or 22’. Anyone can join who wants to have great fun with their dog. Trent and Alex are looking forward to participating in many more DockDogs events held all over the U.S.
Smokey Mountain DockDogs is just getting off the ground and needs more members from Seymour.
