On a beautiful crisp autumn evening at Benton Householder Stadium, Seymour High School pulled off a perfect homecoming. Alumni from years past were everywhere including a cheerleading squad made up of girls from as far back as 1998 through 2008.
Senior Night was part of the Homecoming Celebration. Before the game, seniors were introduced that are involved in football, golf, cheerleading and the band. They were escorted by their parents on the 50 yard line. Following the introductions, the seniors reached from one end of the football field to the other.
The Eagles football team did its part as well by posting a halftime lead of 17-6 over the Cherokee Chiefs. The packed stands were in a perfect mood now for the half time homecoming queen presentation.
Twelve queen candidates were introduced on the 50 yard line. Charlie Householder did the introductions from the press box on the PA system. Most were escorted by their Dads. The candidates were dressed like Hollywood celebrities in evening gowns and dresses.
The participating senior were as follows; Tia Collier, Casey Ford, Hannah Johnson, Raven Jones, Hannah Kerley, Katie Merrill, Nicolette Rutledge, Juliette Sutphin, Courtney Suttles, Tamika Vinya, Bailey Webb, and Faith Williams.
With cameras flashing, looking like the paparazzi, the moment arrived that everyone was waiting for. Charlie Householder announced, “The 2009 Seymour High School Homecoming queen is Hannah Johnson.”
The capacity crowd broke out into cheers and a loud ovation. Hannah Johnson, the daughter of Barry and Kendra Johnson, was crowned 2009 Homecoming Queen by last year’s winner Mary Mize. It was a touching moment as Mary put the crown on Hannah’s head from her wheelchair. Mary Mize was involved in a serious car accident three years ago and lost the ability to walk. She is a testimony to all of us to never give up on life.
Hannah was escorted by her Dad who looked proud enough to pop every button on his shirt.
“I feel honored to be voted 2009 Homecoming Queen. While I hold the title for the upcoming year, I intend to present myself worthy of the privilege and give it the justice it deserves” said Hannah.
The ladies were then escorted to the end zone where camera frenzy ensued.
In the end, the Seymour Eagles football team made the 2009 Homecoming event complete with a 44-6 victory over the Chiefs.
The win clinched a playoff spot among District 2-AAA’s top three 5A schools.
The Eagles will play its final game of the regular season at Morristown West next Friday.
