Oak Ridge Museum receives historic WWII tank cars

Southern Appalachia Railway Museum has acquired two tank cars that were built in 1941 for the United States Army. 

According to a press release from the museum, the cars had been parked for many years on track at the Y-12 Plant and were recently transported by truck to Impact Services at East Tennessee Technology Park, where they were surveyed and cleaned of any residual contamination.

After an official presentation ceremony, the cars were included in the rail museum's historical collection. They will eventually be seen when the museum operates its educational freight train.

Both of the cars were built by American Car & Foundry Company and are numbered USAX 10489 and USAX 10492. Acquisition of these cars is a huge accomplishment for the museum, the press release stated, as they are an extremely rare and historic example of World War II era railroad rolling stock.
