In 1797, King George of England, the monarch who had been George Washington’s mortal enemy during the Revolutionary War, publicly praised his former foe’s recent resignation from the presidency of the USA. 

This selfless event, as well as Washington’s previous resignation as commander of the Continental Army at the conclusion of the Revolution 14 years before, George III concluded, “placed Washington in a light the most distinguished of any man living.”  

In fact, the English King added, that he admired Washington as “the greatest character of the age.”
