Lady Tigers upset GP, Tigers down Cumberland Gap to sweep tourney titles
The Pigeon Forge High School basketball squad’s made it a clean sweep in the District 2-AA Tournament at Union County Friday night.
First the Lady Tigers upset county-rival Gatlinburg-Pittman to claim their second district crown in as many years. Then the top-seeded Tigers knocked off Cumberland Gap for the third time this season.
The Pigeon Forge girls got a game-high 23 points form towering center Nora Ramsey to upend the Lady Highlanders for the first time this season. Ramsey was named Tournament Most Valuable Player for her efforts.
The Lady Tigers also got 17 points from Shanae Rayfield and 14 from Kayla Rayfield in the 65-53 title game win. Pigeon Forge will play Happy Valley Monday at 7 p.m. at Union County High School in Maynardaville.
The Tigers proved the old adage ‘it’s hard to beat a good team three times in the same season’ wrong with their championship-game win.
Pigeon Forge got 20 points from Matt Stiles in its championship-game 70-59 victory. Pigeon Forge will now play Elizabethton in the first-round of the regional tourney on Monday at Union County.
