Wingate University junior guard Justin Baker hit a career-high 35 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 95-76 South Atlantic Conference victory over the Carson-Newman Eagles Saturday night in Holt Fieldhouse.
Baker hit 13-of-18 field goals and eight-of-11 three-pointers during his career night. Wingate sophomore forward Sean Barnette returned from an injury to contribute 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Eagle sophomore guard Darren Williams led the hosts with 22 points. Carson-Newman freshman center Clay Scott had 16 points, while junior guard Kente Hart contributed 11 points.
The Bulldogs never trailed in the contest. Wingate hit 50 percent (35-of-70) from the floor, including 53.1 percent (17-of-32) in the second half. The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Eagles 56-37, led by nine each from Barnette and freshman forward Kenny Villines.
The Eagles got their offense from Scott early on as he scored all 11 C-N points to start the game. But Wingate got hot from the floor, extended the lead to 47-30 at the break and never looked back. The Bulldogs owned the paint, outscoring the Eagles 40-18 for the game. A Barnette three-point field goal gave Wingate an 85-53 lead with 6:59 to play in the second half. The 32-point spread was Wingate’s largest.
Carson-Newman didn’t quit and made a comeback, cutting the lead to 16 (90-74) on a three-point field goal by sophomore forward Andy Tipton at the 2:14 mark. Despite the effort, the Eagles would get no closer.
Wingate is 10-8 overall and 4-3 in the SAC. Carson-Newman falls to 7-10 overall and 2-5 in the SAC. Carson-Newman makes a short trip to play Maryville College Monday, January 28 at 7 p.m. while the Bulldogs step out of the league fray to host North Greenville University Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
