The Lady Eagles had to settle for 2nd place Thursday night as the Lady Roadrunners rallied to beat them 49-36 and take claim to 1st place in the 3-AA district tournament.
Seymour battled to even keep control of the ball throughout the 1st quarter and only managed to score one basket the entire 8 minutes, a 3 pointer from #22 Keely Moore.
Although neither team was able to score until halfway into the first quarter A-E was still able to pull out 9 points and the lead over Seymour. The Lady Eagles would never come back to take the lead.
The 2nd quarter followed the same direction as the first with the exception of #55 Brittany Mikels going 2 for 2 giving her four points. Sophomore Jennifer Wilson buried a trey late into the quarter but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Roadrunners continued to control the flow of the game.
Seymour’s passing game was terrible as they continuously passed into heavy traffic causing multiple turnovers which A-E used to their advantage to take an 18-13 lead going into halftime.
The Lady Eagles showed some signs of life in the 3rd but even with Mikels and Megan Peterson’s dual baskets and free throws it wasn’t enough to make a dent. For every point the Lady Eagles made, A-E returned with one of their own. Seymour continued to give away baskets on bad passes and not being aware of their surroundings. As the quarter came to a close Seymour found themselves still trailing by 5 points.
The 4th quarter belonged to A-E as they seemed to explode on the court. Austin-East’s Lakrystle Goss was on fire from the perimeter, scoring 6 quick points and completing 4 free throws. Shanika Freeman helped pull the lead further from Seymour by dumping in a trey. The game was coming to a close when Chelsie Harrell and Keely Moore each buried a trey of their own to try and keep Seymour’s hopes alive. Alas though it would not be enough to bring the Lady Eagles back into the game.
The Lady Roadrunners returned with 6 points of their own off of three baskets to seal the victory and beat Seymour 49-36. The Lady Eagles go on to the Region 2-AA tournament and play the Loudon Lady Redskins Monday night at Cater High School.
