Eagles advance in 3-AA tournament

Game 1 of the 2005 District 3 boys’ basketball tournament which was held Monday night saw the #5 seed Seymour Eagles take on the #4 seed Carter Hornets. The first period was mostly defense as the only point scored in the first couple minutes was off a Carter free throw. Seymour picked up the pace and took a slight lead when #12 Duncan Smith dropped a duce through the net. The rest of the quarter saw both teams answering each others baskets but it was Carter who had the one point lead at the end of the first; 11-10. During the second quarter #32 Josh Harmon hit 2 of his 4 treys of the period in a row and Chris Slay had a basket of his own plus 4 from the line to give Seymour the lead that they would not lose again. Seymour’s defense held Carter to only 10 points while accumulating 20 of their own ending the period up 30-21. Seymour continued their explosive game well into the 2nd half as they found ways to put the ball in the basket, crashing the boards for multiple attempts each time they missed a shot. Chris Slay continued to work the boards, accumulating 8 total rebounds for the game. Carter eventually made a comeback, cutting the lead down to 7 at one point during the quarter, but Seymour turned it around again to go into the final quarter in the lead 45-31. Seymour managed to hold Carter to 3 points while on a 13 point run that lead into the 4th. The Eagles had as much as a 17 point lead which dwindled and the resurrected many times throughout the rest of the game. As the time counted down on the clock the Eagles played smart and kept up a defensive game, not trying anything too fancy. Earlier in the year Seymour had lost to Carter in both of their meetings and they were looking to stop a 3-peat. They came out playing great offense and terrific defense and managed to finally take a win. The 64-47 ending score sent a message to Austin-East, the #1 seeded team in the district, that the Eagles mean business.
