Another school year has started and I find myself preparing to go to school just as I have been doing for the past 12 years. Every year, I always get nervous and I can’t sleep the night before the first day of school, but I have a few “secrets” that have helped me have awesome school years. I have discovered that if you follow these little hints, the school year will not only be better, it will go by faster!
· Get involved. The school year will pass by much faster if you try to enjoy yourself. Sign up for a club at school that interests you or try an activity you’ve never done before.
· Get some fresh air. Spending time outside helps you to sleep well and be in a better mood. Small amounts of sunlight help your body produce Vitamin D. You could read on your front porch, jump rope, walk your dog or mow the lawn. Get creative!
· Do your homework and ask questions. I don’t mean to sound boring, but it’s much easier to get along with your teachers and parents if you try to do your homework. It’s that simple. Asking questions allows you to develop your own point of view on many subjects, and teachers love people who aren’t afraid to learn.
· Plant, cook, or make something. (with proper supervision of course) I love working hard on a project and being able to see, smell, touch, and even eat it. Knowing you’ve created something out of basically nothing will boost your self-confidence. Maybe you’ll discover a green thumb, natural talent for making spaghetti or your inner Picasso.
· Read more books or at least watch The Discovery Channel. My recommendations: ‘Ella Enchanted’ by Gail Carson Levine, ‘The Giver’ by Lois Lowry, ‘Brian’s Winter’ by Gary Paulsen, and ‘Island of the Blue Dolphins’ by Scott O’Dell. Teachers or your librarian may have some other good suggestions. Educational television programs may sound boring to some people, but the channels often have awesome shows about animals, machines or ancient cultures.
· Try to eat healthy foods and exercise. You’ll just feel better! Your body needs certain nutrients not found in chips and cookies to survive. Eating an apple or even some vegetables (!) will benefit you in the long run. Exercise will make you stronger and help you win some games in gym class.
· Help someone. Try holding the door for another student who’s carrying several books, talk to a classmate many people don’t usually talk to or tell one of your friends that you appreciate them.
Well fellow students, by following my not-so-secret “secrets” I hope this school year will be the best you can make it.
