Congressman John J. Duncan, Jr. has announced that Knoxville’s McGhee-Tyson Airport has been awarded a $2.4 million grant, administered by The Federal Aviation Administration, which will be used to update the airport’s layout plan and master plan.
McGhee-Tyson’s current plans were completed in July 1994. These documents establish 20-year guidelines for facility growth and improvement and are generally revisited every five to ten years.
The FAA grant will be used to update the existing Terminal Area Study, provide a current exhibit A land map identifying airport land dedicated for air service purposes and land acquired with Federal funds, and new airspace and obstruction maps.
The airport will also create a pavement management program, update noise exposure contours, and establish a geographical information system to aid facility management projects with the federal funding.
“This funding is important to continuing McGhee-Tyson’s growth,” Congressman Duncan said. “Improvements such as the renovated terminal and the addition of Independence Air’s service to Knoxville require the long-term planning supported by this grant, and I believe the people of East Tennessee will benefit greatly from this announcement.”
