Hard luck has hovered over the Sevier County Smoky Bears’ heads through the first four games of the soccer season.
The Bears (1-1-2) had a chance to take some of their aggression out and pick up a district win against the Heritage Mountaineers Tuesday night, but not before finding themselves on the bad side of another heartbreaker to district rival South Doyle in their prior game.
Sevier County crushed the Mountaineers 13-0 as Jeremy Adams scored four goals and Nick Miller added three. Even the Bears goalkeeper, Andy Ottolini, got into the offensive action, scoring two goals.
Scott Thomas, Justin Duncan, Brandon Cozzolino and Jarett Milke added one goal each for Sevier County. Steven Jenkins and Adams each had assists in the game.
“We took our frustrations out on them,” said Bears’ coach Scott Gohn. “They let us have target practice on them and we took advantage of it.”
The Mountaineers could blame the schedule makers for that shellacking.
The Bears were still reeling from a 2-2 tie at South Doyle last Friday night in a game that Gohn feels his team let slip away in the final seconds because of mental mistakes, which makes a tie that much harder to swallow.
The game was tied 1-1 after a Luke Somerfield penalty kick in the first half.
Early in the second half, South Doyle had a player get red carded, putting the Bears up a man Sevier Counties’ Miller quickly got a breakaway and gave the Bears a 2-1 lead.
With just under 10 minutes to go in the game, the Bears’ Nick Grizzanti got a red-card of his own, evening up the playing field.
Sevier County had a run at the goal with under a munute left when Adrian Delgado was red flagged for roughing up a South Doyle defender, stopping the clock with 30 seconds left and putting South Doyle a man up.
The Cherokees put the ball in play and quickly moved the ball down, scoring the tying goal with three seconds showing on the game clock.
“We played a great game against South Doyle until the last 30 seconds or so,” Gohn stated. “It was the angriest I had been in a long time. The team pretty much exploded.”
