If you feel the blood calling, have that desire to have a pub experience, then it’s time to head up to Glades Road in Gatlinburg and stop in at The Fox & Parrot Tavern. Brian Papworth owns the local establishment that offers a wide variety of beers, ales, stouts and ciders from the U.K. The menu is a smorgasbord of favorite dishes from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and of course some American influence.
It’s a little bit out of downtown (1076 Glades Road in the Arts and Crafts Community) but the trip is well worth it. Papworth says that most of the patrons are local and on our visit several familiar faces greeted us as we came in.
The tavern is on the second level with a balcony that stands out front offering great star views between the leaves. The interior is open and spacious for family dining and non-smoking. The flags of the United Kingdoms decorate the interior along with a mixture of tavern decorations that could lead you to believe you’re in Dublin, Perth or London.
There is also comfortable couch seating for watching television, a wide assortment of games to help pass an afternoon or early evening and of course cork dart boards for those who relish a real game of darts with the steel tips and chalk board scoring. Along with the feel-good service, it almost resembles a big living room where all your friends stop in for a bit to talk, have a pint, or play the guitar.
The tavern owner also has a unique corner on the market for celebrating British holidays with style. St. Patrick’s Day draws a standing-room only crowd, but big parties also break out for Boxing Day, Twelfth Day and Guy Fawkes Day. “We may be the only pub in America that celebrates that one,” says Papworth, referring to the celebration of Fawkes, who intended to blow up Parliament in 1605 before being caught, drawn and quartered.
The Fox & Parrot has been open since Papworth and friends finished construction in 1998. Local personalities from radio and print can be found inside along with a large number of local regulars who come to enjoy the atmosphere.
