At about 6:15pm daylight savings time, on a Sunday evening, a call went out over the Sevier County Sheriff’s radio that a tree had fallen across Chapman Highway near the Y Road. Within a minute, one of the Seymour Herald reporters was in his car on the way to the Y realizing that a potentially dangerous situation could erupt. By the time he got there, Sevier County Deputy Gary Kent was there working traffic and a couple of pickup trucks with three or four guys were busy sawing on the tree.
“I got there within two or three minutes and those guys had already cut up the log and were in the process of clearing it out,” stated Kent. “I didn’t recognize them to see if they were from the Seymour Volunteer Fire Department or just good citizens. “Whoever they were, their help was must appreciated.”
By the time the Herald reporter parked his car behind the lineup on Chapman Hwy and made his way to where the tree was, the crew had made mince meat of the traffic hazard. Except for the wood shavings, it was completely gone and the traffic had begun to move. Kudos to those that helped.
