A planned log fire soon turned into an uncontrolled rolled hay and tire fire last Thursday, September 12th, in the neighborhood on Tipton Station in South Knox County.
Mary and Ronald Jones of 210 Tipton Station never dreamed they would be causing such a commotion when they attempted to burn a log. “We thought it (the log) was completely out when we noticed that it had burned the field grass and caught the 75 bales of hay and the same amount of tires on fire”, stated Mary Jones. Jones said she immediately called the Seymour Volunteer Fire Department who showed up within five minutes or less to assist with the out-of-control burn.
The Jones used to have cattle on their property. “We had a heck of a time even giving the hay away because no one wanted it,” stated Mary Jones. “Finally someone was to come tomorrow to take it, but now it’s all up in smoke.” And the smoke was a major concern to the Jones as well as to many neighbors.
“I am very concerned for the neighbors having to put up with all this smoke,” exclaimed Mary Jones.
Jones says “We were so concerned that we pulled the trailer out here and spent the entire night in it watching the area to make certain that nothing happened.” But the fire reignited itself the next day. It once again flared up and created enough of a concern to the Jones’ that they once again called on the aid of the Seymour Volunteer Fire Department. At one time there were as many as three fire trucks dealing with the fire.
The Jones have lived in their home for the past 14 years and they say this is the first problem that they’ve had like this. “Our neighbors are all wonderful, and I hate what this smoke is doing to all of us”, Jones stated.
