The season comes down to this. As I am writing this article, the baseball players have voted to set a strike date of August 31st, which could be the end baseball as we know it.
Ok, now here’s the plan. If you have read my previous articles about the salaries and all the other bickering by the millionaires who are running as well as playing the game, then you know where I stand. If you don’t, it will be clearer by reading on.
Several websites have popped up asking you to boycott baseball permanently, if the players strike for a third time in ten years. I say let us go one step further. Starting today, we should begin to make contact with the minor league teams. Ask the minor league players to agree to fill the team rosters, if the Major leaguers decide the price is not right. Then, as fans, we could continue the season, have the World Series, and forget about these money-hungry thugs once and for all. The only way baseball can be equal again is to kill what is currently called Major League Baseball. If they feel that they, as players, are not making enough, then it is time for them to find better paying jobs with the same hours.
Let’s see, what hours do they work again? Oh yeah, Monday through Friday six p.m. until 10pm and Saturday and Sunday 11 am to four p.m., with an off day in the middle of the week. And the average salary is what? Yes, $2 million dollars per year (that is on the low end, most stars make $10-20 million per year). This job is basically what? It’s a Game. And what about the benefits? Meal allowances, free room and board, free travel, medical, retirement, and many others. Does anyone want to apply for their job? Imagine what the telephone call with all that information would sound like to you. Where does the line start? I think the minor leaguers might consider it, since they are probably not going to benefit from the players union getting all this money anyway. If the union gets what they want, several teams will fold in the next couple of years. We must change the game of baseball now. It is no longer a game for kids.
