April 21, 2002 marks the fifth event of the Blessings of the Bikes at the Kodak United Methodist Church, located at 2946 Douglas Dam Road. About 200 motorcycles of every variety were on hand to take advantage of the opportunity to get Blessed.
Over five years ago Chris and Sherry Porter conceived the idea of having the bikes and riders blessed. “I thought it was time”, said Chris Porter. That idea turn from eight bikes in the rain the first time up to 140 last year and approximately 200 this year.
Pastor Ty Harrison gave an excellent sermon and proceeded to go to each machine and bless it and the rider(s). The pastor had the aid of three additional pastors to speed things up. With each blessing the rider(s) received a heart shaped pin, Hope for the Highway book and brochure.
The weather was perfect for riding. Porter said, “The congregation has been praying all week long that the forecast rain and thunderstorms would not happen”. It turned out to be a beautiful day.
Many long time riders as well as brand new riders were able to meet, mingle and admire each other’s bikes. Evan the brand new Harley Davidson V-Rod was there. It’s advertised to be ‘The First Member of a New Family’. All the participants enjoyed free refreshments, hot dogs, hamburgers and even desserts.
Next year’s event should be even bigger. The congregation should continue to pray that the weather will be as good as it was this year.
